COMMUNITY CHORUS AUDITIONS FOR 2026-2027
Audition Requirements:
Each singer must prepare and memorize one of the following options:

The provided excerpt from Sweeney Todd

Sheet music will be sent via email upon submission of the audition form.

There is no need to bring a copy of the music for the pianist if you are planning to sing the provided excerpt.

OR a solo song of your choice performed from memory (preferred to be no longer than 4 minutes and in English if possible).

If you are bringing a solo song of your choice, please be sure to bring a clean double-sided copy of the sheet music in a binder for the pianist to play from.

Headshot and are resume not required.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Before applying, please ensure that you are available and interested in accepting a chorus contract with Cedar Rapids Opera.

We are auditioning chorus members for our upcoming production of Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim, to be performed at The Paramount Theatre on January 22 and 24, 2027.

Staging rehearsals will begin on Saturday, January 2nd, 2027, and continue through opening night.

Every effort will be made to accommodate minor conflicts, but regular attendance at all rehearsals is crucial.

Music rehearsals will be scheduled throughout Fall 2026 to assist with the learning process.

All chorus members must be fully memorized by the first staging rehearsal on Saturday, January 2nd, 2027.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
How long is my audition?

Auditions will be approximately 5 minutes long.
Who will be listening to my audition?
-
Daniel Kleinknecht CRO Artistic Director, Founder, and Conductor, Tad Ennen CRO General Director, and a pianist will be present.
Where are the auditions held?
-
Auditions will be held at the First Lutheran Church (1000 3rd Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403).
Can I bring water into the audition room?

Yes! You are welcome to bring water or anything else you need to feel comfortable and successful.
Do I need to dress up?
-
While formal attire (evening gown or tuxedo) is not necessary, it is always nice to dress up a little for your audition. Wear whatever makes you feel most confident and polished.
Will an accompanist be provided?

Yes, a pianist will be provided at the audition. Please bring a clean, double-sided, easy-to-read copy of your music in a binder for the pianist if you are performing your own solo piece.
Can I sing a cappella (without piano)?
-
We strongly encourage you to sing with piano accompaniment to best demonstrate your musicality and collaboration skills. If you prefer to sing a cappella, please let us know in advance.
What if I have a conflict with the audition date?

If you are unavailable on April 11th but would still like to audition, please email info@cropera.org as soon as possible to inquire about alternative options. Video submissions may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
What happens after the audition?

You will be notified by email no later than the end of May regarding the status of your audition. Those selected will receive a chorus contract with further details.
What should I do if I need to update my availability after auditions?

Please communicate any schedule changes as soon as possible by emailing info@cropera.org so we can plan accordingly. Consistent communication is key!
