Igor Stravinsky's Les noces &
Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi
Les noces (The Wedding), titled by the composer “Russian Choreographic Scenes,” is a rarely performed ballet-cantata for chorus, soloists, and orchestra of percussion and four pianos. Eloy Barragan’s new choreography brings this piece into the 21st century of courtship and marriage. It was last performed in Iowa in April 1991, at Hancher Auditorium by the Joffrey Ballet.
Gianni Schicchi is Puccini’s only comic opera and is the third opera in Il Trittico. Lauretta sings Puccini’s most recognized aria, “O mio babbino caro,” threatening to throw herself into the Arno River if her father, Gianni Schicchi, won’t allow her to marry Rinuccio.
