Cedar Rapids Opera, entering its 24th season, is a professional opera company in Cedar Rapids, IA. Our stated Mission is to advance opera as a vital, living American art form and to develop the artists who create it, as well as the audience that appreciates and supports it. Each year, the company presents three to four live productions in various community venues, and recently, digital productions online.


JOB OPPORTUNITY: CROpera seeks a strong leader with broad practical experience in administration, supervision, fundraising and marketing for the full time exempt position of Executive Director. This position plays a primary role in achieving the company’s mission and works closely with the Artistic Director (AD) on business planning to expand the company’s reputation for artistic excellence while maintaining its financial stability. The position reports to the Board of Directors, requires residence in the Cedar Rapids area, and is supported by one part-time staff person. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Executive Director Job Description

General Company Responsibilities:

  • Support and uphold the mission of the company

  • Attend all opera events serving as primary spokesperson in collaboration with AD

  • Represent the company as primary media contact


Fundraising/Institutional Development Responsibilities:

  • Timely and effective grant applications and final reports

  • Annual individual/corporate appeals

  • Timely acknowledgement and recording in database of all donations and gifts

  • Oversee donor communications and database

  • Planned giving programs and endowments

  • Season/production(live and digital)/ event sponsorships

  • Meeting or exceeding fundraising targets

  • Oversight of all fundraising events


Marketing Responsibilities (in collaboration with AD & art creator):

  • Written and visual content for timely postings of all print and digital materials

  • Manage website content and reporting of analytics

  • Develop, monitor, and maintain marketing plan and brand assets

  • Plan and execute opera communications, both print & digital


Operations and Daily Administrative/Supervisory Responsibilities:

Clerical and office operations:

  • Supervision of part time staff

  • Budget oversight

  • Answer office phones

  • Timely Response to office emails

  • Print & digital organization and maintenance of files

  • Collect and deposit received checks

  • Update and maintain master mailing list

  • Keep office computer software updated and all needed software programs available

  • Create and maintain annual digital calendar with projects and deadlines

  • Create and maintain all vendor/artist/production databases, e.g. homestays/production/promo/fundraising event locations/ services/ media list/ artist & production team/ area theatres/ costume/prop inventory

  • Manage volunteers

Production related operations (in collaboration with AD):

Schedule auditions; execute/receive/record/ file all vendor and artist contracts and bios, headshots, tax forms, costume forms; collect and maintain database for reimbursements from production team; vendor negotiations/contracts/ communications for services and production needs; proof and distribute paychecks for artists and vendors; travel and housing arrangements for artists; negotiate venue rental and contracts; ticket planning and processing; liaison for school outreach; coordinate volunteer efforts in relation to productions and special events


Board Relations:

  • Schedule and distribute meeting agendas and other materials for all monthly regular and executive committee board meetings

  • Attend all monthly regular board and executive committee meetings

  • Attend other committee meetings as requested

  • Assume responsibility for company’s strategic plan in collaboration with committee chairs

  • Provide monthly report and updates on general operations and special projects


Successful candidate skill sets:

  • Proficient in tech platforms including but not limited to Microsoft 360/Google/Zoom/Blackbaud eTapestry (or other donor management database)

  • Previous administrative/supervisory experience; ability to delegate/troubleshoot/make decisions

  • Previous successful fundraising experience

  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of marketing/branding and social media platforms

  • Demonstrated professional business and creative writing skills

  • High level of organization; ability to prioritize day-to-day activities & work independently

  • High level of effective interpersonal/communication/collaborative skills

  • Prior experience with event planning
